A molecule helps cells tell the time!

How do cells know whether it is day or night? The household chemical hydrogen peroxide, which is used to bleach clothes without harming the colour, may hold the key!

What was discovered?

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is produced in all animal cells and it acts as a signal for their active and resting phases.

Why is it important?

This is the first time that a link has been found between metabolism - all the chemical reactions needed inside a cell to keep it 'alive' - and the circadian rhythms of tissues and organs.
